The Best Paved Roads

1. RN4: Kigali to Musanze (Gorilla Country)

This is arguably Rwanda's best highway. The 110 km stretch from Kigali to Musanze is smooth, wide, and offers incredible views of the Virunga volcanoes as you head north. Speed limit is 80 km/h, and the drive takes about 2 hours. Perfect in any car — even a sedan handles this beautifully.

2. RN1: Kigali to Huye (The Southern Route)

Heading south from Kigali to Huye (formerly Butare), the RN1 winds through Rwanda's famous thousand hills. The road is fully paved and takes about 2.5 hours. Stop at the Nyanza Royal Palace and the Ethnographic Museum in Huye.

3. RN3: Kigali to Akagera (Safari Road)

The eastern highway to Akagera National Park is flat and fast compared to the hilly west. Well-maintained tarmac all the way to the park gate. The landscape shifts from hills to savanna — it feels like a different country.

4. Lake Kivu Coastal Road (Rubavu to Karongi)

This is the most beautiful drive in Rwanda, possibly in all of East Africa. The narrow road hugs the hillside above Lake Kivu, with sweeping views of the water and the Congo mountains beyond. Take it slow — the curves are tight but the views are worth every minute.

Roads That Need a 4x4

While most main roads are paved, some destinations require a sturdy vehicle:

• Inside Akagera National Park — unpaved, sandy, and sometimes muddy park roads
• Nyungwe Forest trails — the approach roads can be steep and slippery in rain
• Remote villages — secondary roads off the main highways can be rough laterite

• Speed cameras are everywhere — stick to 60 km/h in towns, 80-100 km/h on highways
