Airport Pickup in Kigali: What to Expect When You Arrive in Rwanda

Arriving at Kigali International Airport (KGL)

Kigali International Airport is Rwanda's main gateway, handling flights from across Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. Despite being a capital city airport, it's refreshingly small, efficient, and well-organized. Here's what to expect from touchdown to driving away.

Immigration & Visa

Rwanda offers visa on arrival for most nationalities ($50, payable in USD cash or card). The process is fast — typically 10-20 minutes. You'll need:

• Valid passport (6+ months remaining)
• Return or onward ticket
• Proof of accommodation
• Yellow fever certificate (required)

Alternatively, apply for an e-visa at irembo.gov.rw before travel — this speeds up arrival significantly.

Baggage & Customs

Luggage arrives quickly — usually within 15-20 minutes of landing. Rwanda has strict rules on plastic bags — they're banned nationwide. If you have any in your luggage, they'll be confiscated at customs (no fine, they just take them). Use cloth or paper bags instead.

Airport Layout

The airport is simple:

• Arrivals hall — immigration, baggage claim, customs, currency exchange
• Meet & greet area — just outside arrivals, where your driver will be waiting
• Parking — directly in front of the terminal

There's free WiFi in the terminal, ATMs in the arrivals hall, and several currency exchange counters.

Getting Your Rental Car

At Kigali Rent Car, our airport pickup works like this:

1. Book in advance — tell us your flight number and arrival time

3. Driver meets you — holding a sign with your name, in the meet & greet area
4. Quick handover — check the car, sign the agreement, drive away

What About the New Bugesera Airport?

Rwanda is building a brand-new international airport at Bugesera, about 40 km south of Kigali. When completed, it will be the main international hub. Until then, all flights operate from Kigali International Airport. We'll offer pickup from both airports.

Tips for Your First Drive from the Airport

• Drive on the right — Rwanda follows right-hand traffic
• Speed limit is 60 km/h in Kigali city — cameras are everywhere
• The drive to most Kigali hotels takes 15-30 minutes from the airport
• Get a local SIM — MTN or Airtel, available at the airport or we include one
• Download offline maps before leaving WiFi
