Why Rwanda for Gorilla Trekking?

How to Get a Gorilla Trekking Permit

Gorilla permits in Rwanda cost $1,500 per person and must be booked in advance through the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) or an authorized tour operator. Only 96 permits are issued daily (8 visitors per gorilla family, 12 habituated families), so book early — especially for peak season (June–September and December–February).

The permit includes park entry, a ranger guide, and one hour with the gorillas.

Getting to Volcanoes National Park from Kigali

The drive from Kigali to Musanze (the base town for gorilla trekking) takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours via the RN4 highway. The road is fully paved and scenic, passing through rolling hills and small towns.

What to Pack for Gorilla Trekking

• Waterproof hiking boots — the forest floor is muddy and uneven.
• Long pants and long sleeves — to protect against nettles and insects.
• Rain jacket — it's a rainforest; showers are common.
• Garden gloves — useful for grabbing branches and plants while hiking.
• Camera (no flash) — you'll want to capture the moment, but flash photography disturbs the gorillas.
• Water and snacks — treks can last 1 to 6 hours depending on where the gorillas are.
• Tipping money — $10–20 USD for your porter is customary and appreciated.

Best Time to Visit

Gorilla trekking is available year-round, but the best conditions are during the dry seasons:

• June to September — dry, clear trails, best visibility.
• December to February — short dry season, fewer crowds.

The wet seasons (March–May and October–November) are muddier but offer lower permit availability pressure and lush, dramatic scenery.
