The Drive from Kigali to Akagera

Akagera National Park — Rwanda's only Big Five destination — is just a 2.5 to 3-hour drive east of Kigali. The route is straightforward, the road is excellent, and self-drive safaris are fully permitted inside the park. Here's your complete planning guide.

Route & Road Conditions

From Kigali, take the RN3 highway east toward Kayonza, then follow signs south to Akagera. The entire route to the park gate is paved tarmac in good condition. Any car can handle the highway, but inside the park you need a 4x4 — the internal roads are unpaved, sandy in dry season, and muddy after rain.

Distance: ~130 km from Kigali to the south gate (Kiyonza entrance)

Drive time: 2.5–3 hours to the gate

Park Entry Fees (2025)

• Foreign adults: $50 per person (24 hours)
• Foreign children (6-12): $25
• East African residents: RWF 5,000
• Vehicle entry: RWF 5,000 (included in most rental agreements)
• Boat safari: $50 per person (highly recommended)
• Night game drive: $50 per person

Best Time for Game Drives

Early morning (6:00–9:00 AM) is the best time. Predators are active, the light is beautiful for photography, and it's cooler. The late afternoon (3:30–6:00 PM) is also excellent as animals come to water sources.

Midday is hot — most animals rest in shade and are harder to spot.

• Elephants — large herds, especially near the lakes
• Black rhinos — reintroduced in 2017 (rare but possible)

• Binoculars — essential for spotting wildlife at distance
