Akagera National Park Safari

Eastern Rwanda | 1-3 Days

Rwanda's Premier Safari Destination

Akagera National Park is Rwanda's largest protected wetland and the last remaining refuge for savanna-adapted species in the country. Spanning over 1,122 kmยฒ along the Tanzanian border, it's home to the Big Five and over 500 bird species.

What You'll Experience

  • Game drives through open savanna, spotting lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, and buffalo
  • Boat safari on Lake Ihema โ€” hippos, crocodiles, and spectacular waterbirds
  • Night game drives for a chance to see leopards, hyenas, and other nocturnal wildlife
  • Bird watching with over 500 species including the rare shoebill stork

Getting There

Akagera is a 2.5-3 hour drive east of Kigali on good tarmac roads. We recommend a 4x4 SUV for the park's internal roads. Self-drive safaris are permitted, or we can provide an experienced driver-guide.

Best Time to Visit

June to September (dry season) offers the best wildlife viewing as animals gather around water sources. The park is open year-round.
